Cosmetic dental bonding is a less expensive alternative to porcelain veneers. As part of this procedure, a tooth-colored resin made of durable composite is applied to the teeth and hardened with a special light. Bonding is an incredibly versatile procedure, and it can help you to restore your smile.
There are many reasons you might choose cosmetic bonding. Some of the most frequent reasons our patients request bonding are:
- Improving the appearance of discolored teeth
- Closing spaces between teeth
- Making teeth look longer
- Changing the shape of teeth
The cosmetic bonding process is very similar to the bonding process for repairing decay, cracks, and other tooth damage. We’ll start by using a shade guide to select the resin color that will best match the color of your tooth. To help the bonding material adhere to your tooth, we’ll roughen the surface of the tooth and apply a conditioning liquid. Then we will apply a putty-like resin, mold it, and sculpt it to the desired shape. A curing light will be used to harden the material. Once it’s cured, Dr. Robertson will trim, shape, and polish the bonded area to match the rest of your teeth. From beginning to end, this process takes about 30 minutes to an hour for each tooth.
Cosmetic bonding procedures can usually be completed without anesthesia. Unlike veneers, bonding does not necessarily involve removing your tooth enamel. A vast majority of the time, bonding can be completed in one office visit. Although bonding is not a permanent solution, it can last for 5-10 years with good dental hygiene and gentle chewing.

Bonding is best for small changes and teeth in low bite pressure areas. If you need a bigger change or a more durable solution, veneers may be the better choice for you.
