Repair Damaged Teeth With Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is an easy and relatively inexpensive solution to a number of oral health problems. During this procedure, a tooth-colored resin made of a durable composite is applied to the teeth and hardened with a special light. When this resin hardens and bonds to your teeth, your smile will be restored!
Bonding is an incredibly versatile dental procedure. Some of the reasons we might recommend bonding include:
- Repairing decayed, chipped, or cracked teeth
- Improving the appearance of discolored teeth
- Closing spaces between teeth
- Protecting exposed tooth roots when gums recede
- Making teeth look longer
- Changing the shape of teeth
We also use bonding as an alternative to dental amalgam, or silver fillings.
The Dental Bonding Process With Dr. Robertson, DDS
We start the bonding process by using a shade guide to select the resin color that will best match the color of your tooth. To help the bonding material adhere to your tooth, we’ll roughen the surface of the tooth and apply a conditioning liquid. Afterward, we’ll apply a putty-like resin in the color you chose, mold it, and then smooth it to the desired shape. A curing light will be used to harden the material. Once it’s fully cured, Dr. Robertson will trim, shape, and polish the bonded area to match the rest of your teeth. From beginning to end, this process takes about 30 minutes to an hour for each tooth.
Unlike veneers and crowns, which sometimes need to be produced in a lab, bonding can usually be completed in one office visit. It also removes less tooth enamel and usually doesn’t require anesthesia unless you’re filling a decayed tooth. Bonding material can sometimes stain or chip, so you’ll need to maintain a proper dental hygiene routine and a healthy diet to keep it looking good.
Bonding is best for small changes, temporary corrections, and teeth in low bite pressure areas. If you need a bigger, permanent, or more durable solution, crowns or veneers may be the better choice for you. Dr. Robertson is happy to talk you through your options and help you make that decision. Our practice also provides high-quality crowns, veneers, and fillings.
